How I Think About Teaching:

About

I have been teaching for over 35 years and I have developed very effective ways to teach my students what they would like to know. I also have a lot of experience performing and this informs the way I share knowlege. My desire is to help you to play your music of choice as efficiently as possible.

I teach the following instruments: Guitar (Electric, Classical and Acoustic), Electric Bass, Ukulele, Cuban Tres, Cavaquinho and Banjo.

Lessons are in your home (or mine!) here in Manhattan, I live in Harlem but will come to you. I do have a few students that come to my home studio for lessons, so feel free to ask.

All levels of students from extreme beginners to very advanced will feel comfortable with me, because I enjoy sharing knowledge. Many students have asked me why I still enjoy teaching beginners in addition to my advanced students. To me it's not about the level. If the student is having breakthroughs and making advances (and practicing) it's exciting and it doesn't matter what level the student is at.

For Parents of young children: I will teach as young as 5 years old, but the student has to be ready. I always tell parents that the lessons are not the issue, but that the hard part is in between lessons when I'm not around.

For Adult Students: If you wish to study without reading music, I have teaching methods that don't require it.

I teach the following types of music: Jazz, Classical, Rock, Pop, Funk, Blues, R&B, Fingerstyle, Folk and many variations of these types of music.

Regarding cancellations: I have a very easy 24 hour cancellation policy. Please notify me 24 hours in advance, and you won't have to pay for the lesson. In addition, if you need to change your lesson that week, check with me and see if someone else cancelled at a time/day slot you might need. This happens very often.

From a Parent:
“Steve taught our son Josh how to play the guitar…starting at the age of 8 through High School. What Josh loved about learning with Steve was that lessons were fun. Even from the beginning, Steve made Josh feel confident that he could start playing guitar. Steve’s style of teaching is engaging. He knows how to connect and relate with kids and he would jam on his own guitar to emphasize what he was teaching. Lessons felt like jam sessions together and gave Josh a sense of accomplishment that he was really playing. Over time, Steve taught Josh bass and then electric guitar. Josh always looked forward to his lessons and it was amazing to hear him perform at Steve’s annual student recitals. We would recommend Steve to anyone seeking a great guitar teacher."
